French 9/10/09

Today in French class, we learned how to change articles (The, A) and adjectives (calm, shy, French, smart) so that they reflect the subject in gender and number.  We used our knowledge of conjugating "Etre" to start making full sentences.

Ex)
Je suis une fille calme.
Il est un garcon calm.
Ils sont calms.

Mais...
Je suis une fille timide.
Il est un garcon timide.
The word for shy (timide) is gender neutral, meaning it doesn't change spelling for a girl/boy.

We also learned how to make a sentence negative.  Use the "ne...pas" sandwich with the verb in between.
Ex)
Je suis timide. (positive, gender neutral: I am shy)
Je ne suis pas timide.  (negative, gender neutral:  I am not shy.)

Then we practiced our numbers, 1 -29.  Phrases that are useful to know when dealing with numbers include "Combien" (often followed by the untranslatable "de") , how many or how much; and "Il y a", there is/there are.
Ex)  Il y a combien de stylos dans ton sac?
There are how many pens in your bag?

Il y a cinq stylos dans mon sac.
There are five pens in my bag.

**Due to tomorrow being an "A" day instead of "C", coworker lists will be due on Tuesday instead of tomorrow.
