IMPORTANT: Absences, lateness, and leaving early

Many, many students have asked for special accommodations based on their scheduling issues.  Please read the following in order to understand my stance on these issues and how your grade will be affected.

Please keep in mind that according to the university, any justified absence will result in a 0.  An unjustified absence in any class means a 0 with no chance for partial credit.  If on a CC day, an unjustified absence leads to rattrapage.  You can read the university policy here.

I believe my personal policy is much more lenient.  If you miss a class, you receive a 0, because I have no work from that day to grade for you.  However, if you let me know what's going on, then you can show me that you did the work by emailing it to me.  I can give you PARTIAL credit for that.

It would not be fair to the people who went through the trouble to come to class to start from the same grade as those who did not come.  Therefore you will have a significant reduction in your grade if you email me the work in place of coming to class.  Sometimes that is your only option, and I understand.  A reduced grade is still better than a 0.  At the university level, it is extremely rare for teachers to accept late work.  I think I am being very generous to do so.

In the grade book, all absence ("ABS") marks will become zeroes.  The only reason that "ABS" may remain in some cases is if the student was NOT ENROLLED in the class at the time of that particular grade.  If you were enrolled but did not come, you will first have an ABS, then a 0, then possibly a partial grade if you send me your work.  Anyone with an ABS should consult the website entry for that date and send me their work if they wish to have a (partial) grade.

As for leaving early from class: you should know that I assume that your university education is your first priority.  When you enroll in a course, you should plan to attend that entire course.  If the course is not at a convenient time for you, that is an issue for you and the secretariat; you should find something else that will work for you.  We all want to leave class early, we all want to travel or stay home or *____________*.  Please note that only in the most urgent of cases will I approve early dismissal with no penalties.

In certain cases, in Langue Vivante classes, I will agree to you doing the diary portion of class at your home.  However, I will remove a MINIMUM of 2 points from your final grade for doing so.  I think that is fair, since you are leaving as a matter of convenience for your weekend plans and not an emergency.

Please consider these points and make your decisions accordingly, and keep me up to date on your position.  Like I said, I understand your situation but cannot give you special treatment without deducting some points from your assignments.  You are adults and you decide what is important enough to be worth your time in life, I hope that a good grade in  English class is one of those important things.
