Homework for next time: prepare a presentation on a "How-to" article or process.  Explain why someone would need to know how to do this thing, and then explain the steps necessary to complete the process.  Optionally, you may bring objects with you to class to give a demonstration.  You can get this information from something you already know or simply from an online source such as this video. You will also need to explain difficult words or phrases that you came across in the preparation for your presentation.

• Today, we met in the CRL.
• We presented our chosen business profiles to small groups.  Only certain presentations were graded by Ms. P.  
• 3 book reports were presented.
• We got our homework for next time: Read an interview with a celebrity (well-known person) online or in a magazine.  Summarize the interview.  Make a list of difficult or new words and phrases.  Make up 2 additional questions that you would have asked the celebrity in addition to what was answered in the interview.   Give your thoughts on the interview and if your opinion of  the celebrity changed after reading it.

Meeting place and time this week

We will meet earlier than normal this week (similar to last week).  However, it will not be in Fromont as planned.  We must meet in the CRL in order to have space for the class (Fromont is booked).

To summarize: this Wednesday, Langue Vivant EP-1 (normally from 17h30-19h30) will take place in the CRL from 15h30 to 17h30.

Today in Class, LV EP1

Today, we met in the CRL.  We presented our reviews of TV/movies to our group.  Interviews continued and we used the resources in the CRL to improve on weak areas in English.  For next time, there is a choice:

• Prepare an analysis of a review of a movie or TV show.  This is NOT your own review, it's the analysis of a professional critic's review.
• Write out the lyrics of your favorite English song.  Emphasize translations of difficult words or passages.  Optional: bring a way to share your song with your group.

In class today, LV EP-1

1.  We did our listening exercise based on voicemail messages left for "Kate," who is preparing a party while her parents are out of town.  Ms. P. recorded grades from the notes students took on these exchanges.
2.  Class debate: Should all drugs be legalized?  In groups of 3, one person argued "for," one "against," and one person was the moderator.  Ms. P. recorded grades on expression and pronunciation.   We discussed the new proposition in Uruguay and the ethics of companies like Philip Morris (read one opinion here).

4.  Homework for next time: prepare a 5-10 minute review of a restaurant, movie, or TV show.

I will post updates from our sessions every day.  I may ask you to bring certain documents from the site to class.   You may check your grades online by entering your ID number in the section titled "What's my grade?"

25% - Listening: You will be graded on your ability to paraphrase and summarize an audio clip played at the beginning of each class.  You should keep these summaries in a journal or other safe place; you may be called to present them at random for multiple grades.

25 % - Presentations: multiple grades per semester, may be replaced by debate

·      Preparation and presentation of your own topic within specified guidelines.  Should last 8 – 10 minutes.  Must include at least 2 discussion questions for your group.  Must come from newspaper, magazine, online article, podcast, or book in English.

·      Participation and contributions to discussions of all presentations (active listening, posing and answering pertinent questions)

25% - Exam Grade 1: Book Report

·      Choose a book you like.  Original may be in English or French, but report will be in English.

·      Present: The title, the author, the characters, the story, the main themes, the style, a quotation or short passage that represent the style, a person who would benefit from reading this book and why, questions for audience discussion

·      Your grade will include: overall impression, audience engagement, enthusiasm, articulation and ability to be understood, professional conclusion of report

25% - Exam Grade 2: Personal Diary, Due:     Week 10      _

·      The final 30 minutes of each class will be dedicated to self-assessment and reflection in the form of a personal diary.  The secret word for your class is cataclysm.  Each entry should be around half a page in length, and include:

o   Your overall impression of class that day

o   What you learned from the topic you presented [information/grammar/vocabulary]

o   What you learned from topics that others presented [information/grammar/vocabulary]

o   Areas of weakness and how you will address them

o   Your plan of preparation for next week’s class
