(The Macho Obelisk)
Situated in the Malecón, this obelisk commemorates the temporary name change of Santo Domingo to Ciudad Trujillo.
George Washington avenue runs along the coast.  On one side is the Caribbean Sea and on the other side are Santo Domingo office buildings. The capital of the Dominican Republic was founded in 1496 by the brother of Christopher Columbus, Bartolomé Columbus.
The Merengue is the national dance of the Dominican Republic. It has a fast rhythm and is a mix of African and European elements.
